Remember that friend or even family member you used to sit down with over a coffee or beer with whom you could 'shoot the breeze', talk about literally anything that came to mind? Before long you'd mention what was really on your mind and they'd casually throw back a comment based on what you said, which stopped you in your tracks. A pearl of wisdom. A wise sage once said, "A word in season, how good it is". Such a word comes through resonant, creative listening.
Leadership is NOT friendship...unless you're talking Greek

It would be great if strong leaders could be 'true friends' with their subordinates...or would it? Perhaps not, and the reason why probably comes down to three words...'duty of care'. On the other hand maybe it depends on the the language...

English is a powerful, instrumental language but at times lacks the nuance of other linguistic codes, including classical Greek. For instance, did you know when Plato was struggling up the Acropolis steps, he could choose from at least six words to describe love, four commonly used to describe different relationship types - familial, friendship among equals, intimate, and spiritual. In many ways, each describes a type of friendship, the depth of which involves degrees of mutual creative engagement.
